Beyond the form

Tilde Anna Jäger AT
Exhibition 02.11. - 14.12.2024

In a world that daily confronts us with clear structures and defined forms, the exhibition BEYOND THE FORM opens up an exciting shift in perspective. In the BURN-IN art space, the powerful works of Austrian artist Tilde Anna Jäger unfold, inviting us into a world beyond the visible, where the unconscious and sensory experiences reside. Jäger's works captivate with intense colors, dynamic structures, and a unique expression of inner states—intimate reflections of the human condition that provoke thought and resonate deeply.

The exhibition emphasizes Jäger's distinctive style, embodying elements of both Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism, which prioritize spontaneous, intuitive creation and aim to make the invisible visible. Jäger transcends traditional form, channeling her emotions, content, and deep psychological influences onto large-format canvases, transforming viewing into a holistic experience.

Her artistic practice is marked by a dynamic, associative process. She describes herself as a self-taught maverick, whose works emerge from a creative interplay of explosive expression and deliberate reflection. The process begins with impulsive, almost musical creation—comparable to the tachist approach of the Informel—where the creative flow finds expression in its rawest form. This is followed by a patient, methodical refinement, which endows her paintings with depth and a captivating expressiveness.

Inspired by the depth psychology theories of Freud and Jung, Jäger embarks on an introspective journey in her creative process. Her works emerge from a conscious dialogue with her own subconscious, which she describes as a journey inward. This connection between body and mind, sensation and representation, manifests in her expressive paintings, which resist clear interpretation, thereby evoking a strong emotional response.

The predominantly large-format acrylic works, spanning from 2000 to 2022, come together to form an orchestrated oeuvre, where colors and shapes are arranged like music, creating a harmonious visual symphony. Jäger pursues the essence of human existence, pushing beyond formal boundaries and conventions. With her bold application of paint and spontaneous lines, she creates works that serve as visual explorations of the self. Her paintings are mirrors, revealing not just the self, but the many facets of human existence.

Dr. Wilfried Seipel underscores the significance of Jäger's work, praising her ability to "materialize the unconscious in a way that leaves a lasting impact on the viewer." Jäger's paintings are not merely depictions of the visible; they are materialized reflections of the inner life. She transforms complex emotions and social issues into compelling visual expressions, inviting viewers to look deeper into themselves and challenge their own perceptions.

The exhibition BEYOND THE FORM is more than just a presentation of abstract art. It is an invitation to engage with the unknown, to break through external forms, and immerse oneself in the world of perception. Tilde Anna Jäger opens a space beyond the visible—a space where art bridges the conscious mind and the unconscious sensibility.

The alchemy of experiencing art: On creating, showing and collecting art.

For Tilde Anna Jäger, art is an untamed, symphonic process - an act of liberation and at the same time an orchestral fusion of the unconscious with the canvas. Informel, an art style that refuses to be rigidly defined, grasps coincidences and emotions and transforms them into a powerful crescendo of color and movement. With every brushstroke, Tilde Anna Jäger conducts an artistic symphony in which the alchemy of creation enters the stage: art, not as a mere image, but as a true survival strategy. This is exactly how I experienced Jäger in our collaboration - as a fighter who wanders through the orchestral chaos of art to finally find an inner sound that echoes in the viewer. The collector becomes both a witness and a part of this artistic miracle by integrating the orchestrated alchemy into his own world, enchanted by the raw power of the artist.

And then it happens: the collector takes the work into his care, where it unfolds its sonorous effect outside the gallery, beyond the studio. The "alchemy of the art experience" is set in motion, a visual melody that unfolds and triggers a constant dialog. The work breathes, it vibrates, it pulsates - it tells of creation, of survival and of triumphant rebellion over the formless. The colors resound sometimes loudly, sometimes softly, never definitively, but in constant motion in the gaze and perspective of the viewer. Buying art becomes so much more than the mere act of owning it - it is the prelude to a symphony, an experience that is constantly evolving without ever falling silent.

Tilde Anna Jäger

Tilde Anna Jäger, born in Amstetten, Lower Austria, in 1948, demonstrated a strong affinity for artistic expression from a young age. At just 14, she won first prize in a European painting competition for secondary schools. Even before turning 20, she immersed herself in music, undertaking intensive piano training that shaped her sense of rhythm and structure. After graduating from high school, she pursued studies at the University of Vienna, where she earned a degree as an academic translator in 1972. However, the written word was just the beginning—she soon discovered painting as her true form of expression.

Jäger's artistic breakthrough began in the 1980s, following a stay in Brussels, where she produced her first works in sculpture, drawing, and painting. Since 1997, she has gained public recognition as a painter. Her works, characterized by an associative and semi-abstract visual language, reflect her exploration of Art Informel and have garnered support from prominent museum directors such as Dr. Otto Breicha, Dr. Wilfried Seipel, and Dr. Berthold Ecker. Jäger's 40-year artistic journey demonstrates a profound engagement with the depths of the human psyche—she paints what lies beyond the visible, making music on the canvas, always within a creative flow.

Her artistic achievements have been celebrated in numerous solo exhibitions, including those at the Studiogalerie Wien (1990), Blau-Gelben Viertelgalerie Weistrach (1997), Galerie Alpha Wien (1998), and Kurhaus St. Stephan Wien (2005). Her shows at Schloss Gabelhofen and DOC St. Pölten in 2009 also attracted significant attention. Another highlight was the book presentation Dann muss es Liebe sein at MUSA in 2013. Jäger's works can also be found in public spaces, such as the permanent wall design at the Salzburg Exhibition Center. The acquisition of ten of her pieces by the Salzburgarena in 2004 further illustrates the lasting impact her art has had on the art world.

As Maria Lassnig once said, "Art is my survival strategy"—a sentiment that resonates in every brushstroke Jäger makes. Her art is a dance between form and freedom, an artistic expression that continually teeters on the edge of humanity.

Tilde Anna Jäger currently lives and works in Vienna and the Mostviertel region.
